The BQC Open Quizzes 2013 Are Coming!

And with that Paul Revere-esque opening, we'd like to invite you to attend our third annual weekend of competitive quizzing in this tiny western outpost of the country.

We're hosting six quizzes over two days (2-3 March, 2013), and we'd like to have as many people over as we possibly can. Last year, we had a most wonderful turnout, and we're hoping to top that this year.

Not only have we scheduled the events so that locals and visitors from out of town can make it to the events and back comfortably, we've also put together a wide range of topics for our quizzes, and INR 60,000 in prize money.

Entry Fee: INR 150 per team per quiz. All-student (college/school) teams quiz free.

The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival Literature Quiz 2012

Anannya Deb, Sumant Srivathsan and Vibhendu Tewari, on behalf of the Bombay Quiz Club, cordially request your presence at the Literature Quiz conducted annually as part of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival's Literature calendar. This year's edition is the fourth of its kind, and therefore, it will not have a name, and we will refer to ourselves by obscure symbols that Robert Langdon will spend his next novel appearance deciphering. Yes, Govind Grewal, this is a Led Zeppelin reference. And a Dan Brown reference too, but you won't hold that against us, I hope.

When: Saturday, 11 February 2012. We start at 5 PM, so please be there at least 15 minutes earlier.

Where: Bombay Natural History Society Auditorium, Hornbill House, Kala Ghoda. Here's the Google Maps listing, where you can find directions, bus routes and a strangely named location called Lion Gate.

The Rules:

• Teams of two. If you're flying solo, we'll play QuizSaathi.com. Stags will not be turned away. In fact, nobody will be turned away. Not even Salman Rushdie.
• Bring a pen and something to support a sheet of paper. There will be a written elimination round.
• The top six teams will qualify for the finals, wherein there will be blood. We don't mean the film based on Upton Sinclair's short story Oil!.
• We need help hiding the bodies once the winners have been identified, so please do stick around and watch the finals. Don't make us lock the doors.
• We're serious about the door-locking.

The Prizes:

• They exist. In cash. Just don't plan to finance your vacation. It will suffice, however, to buy the drinks when you win.
• There is also a second and a third prize. You can sponsor the soft drinks that people put into their drinks.
• If you're underage, ask your parents what to do with your loot. Ask them for books.

The BQC - IIT Bombay Quizzes - Recaps, Reviews and Recognition

On 6 March, 2011, the BQC and IIT Bombay hosted the inaugural Bombay Open quizzes, a day-long event with up to four quizzes. We'd like to thank IIT-B and its students for support with:

• the venue - a new, large and comfortable lecture hall;
• printing posters and directions;
• audio-visual equipment, including the buzzers which were used in all quizzes;
• research for the Open Sports and General quizzes; and
• a generous number of student participants in all quizzes.

And our sponsors:

• Anand Sivashankar, Anannya Deb and Atul Mathew, for contributing Rs. 5,000 each towards prizes, particularly for the Sports Quiz;
• Rajiv Rai, for contributing Rs. 12,000 towards prizes and a dozen other expenses; and
• Vibhendu Tewari, for not asking for Rs. 7,000 back from the BQC for earlier expenses.

In the absence of formal corporate sponsorship, it's wonderful that these guys can open up their wallets to host an event of this nature. Particularly when they're giving up a significant amount of time to go with their financial contributions. Many thanks, gentlemen, and here's hoping we can set a trend with benefactors growing in strength.
