Shamika and Mario

As the Quizzical year is about to set and its patron saint Sri Sri Rajiv Rai about to leave for skyscrapery shores , the BQC will see two rising rising stars make their debut as QMs. MQF gen quiz finalist Shamika and the prodigal youngster Mario Fernando will host their first quiz this Sunday. Both of them have been consistently impressive all through the year and here's our chance to impress them. Don't miss it.

Women's day quiz

After the Irish Open this Sunday at 2 pm, our regular 3 pm session will be a special Womens Day quiz. The quizmaster will be VInoo Sanjay. This is what he says about the quiz.

"We have all wondered, for various reasons, about how to get more women into quizzing. This quiz will not solve that issue. What it will try to do, in honour of International Women's Day on March 8, is acknowledge the achievements of a few noteworthy women - some well-known and some not. Their achievements would be across various fields and roles, and almost always something other than 'just' being the mother, wife or daughter of somebody of the male gender. There will be 40 questions on this theme, with a set of 10 general questions separating the two halves."

The quiz will begin immediately after the Irish open concludes ~~3pm

Sandeep Mathias

After an exhilarating two days at MQF14, many of us quiz junkies need another fix of quizzing to keep away the withdrawal symptoms .

MQF Gen quiz finalist and rising quiz talent, Sandeep Mathias has just the remedy. He will debut as QM for BQC with a gen quiz to keep us all interested this Sunday 23rd Feb.

First up - Veteran comeback kid Rajeev Chakravarthi conducts 30 questions (Flavour: General) at 3 pm 

Then we have Sports Gawd from the East Deepanjan Deb conducting a Sports quiz. This quiz will start immediately after Rajeev's set is done.

Mumbai Quiz Festival 2014

The Mumbai Quiz Festival is no longer an idea, it is a franchise. That is to say, sequels will be churned out, year on year, and larger crowds will swell the ranks of the participants and audiences. Therefore, we present to you MQF 2014. The only difference from say, a Transformer franchise apart from the absence of Megan Fox will be the lack of blockbuster profits. 

The MQF is the most efficient and rewarding quiz festival in the country, and this year we will further up the game by shifting to a truly upmarket location - the Nehru Centre. It comes with efficient air-conditioning, aesthetics interiors, good lighting and excellent PR system - need I say more. 

2 days of non-stop quizzing - 6 quizzes in all. Open to all it promises to be a high quality, excellent quiz series with something for everyone.

New Year, old hand.

The Dadabhai Nowrojee of BQC, Balakrishnan Satyam, will kickoff the new year with his Quiz on Sunday. Having spent his salad days in 10th century Russia and having seen the Mongol invasion firsthand from a cliff, Bala has over 900 years of Quizzing experience, more than ample to prepare a very diverse quiz. And he makes them as perfect as they come. Get ready for a quiz better than any new year's party. (you might have to answer a little louder though, Bala suffered some hearing damage when he heard the Big Bang.)

  When: 3 PM, Sunday, 12th January 2013.  (Please be there by 2:45 PM for team assignments) Where: Pinstorm, Ground Floor, Swati House (Next to Kotak Bank on Linking Road), North Avenue, Santa Cruz (W). Directions: From the south: If you come north on Linking Road from Bandra to SantaCruz, you'll find a large Benetton Store on the right. At the end of that block is a Kotak Bank at the corner. Take a right and it's the next building, take the first gate and tell the sentry you've come for the quiz. From the north: If you get on to Linking Road at the airplane park end, you'll cross a HDFC Bank. A block later, you'll see a Kotak Bank on the corner - do not cross it. Take a left at that point and it's the building next to Kotak Bank.

2013 has been a Landmark year for the Bombay Quiz Club, on more ways than one. Early this year, we got registered as a society which has opened up the possibility for us to operate on a more substantial scale. Mid-year, the quintessential Mumbai team,  Nawabs of Mahabs (Rajiv, Vibhendu, Gopal) won the Mumbai Landmark Quiz and marched ahead to win the national finals as well.  Throughout the year, BQC quizzers performed well in national and international written quizzes, while Vikram Joshi consistently churned out world top-10 scores. The Mumbai Quiz Festival 2013 was the biggest so far and has set the precedent for even more grandeur at the MQF 2014. While it was unfortunate that some regular BQC members had to leave for other cities, it was very comforting to see a good number of newcomers quizzing at the club on a regular basis. All in all, a good year.

So hosting the last quiz of this bumper year, we have someone who has had a great year himself. Coming out of a 15 year long quizzing hiatus, Venkatraghavan Sahasranaman won his debut landmark quiz in Pune this year, triggering a return of sorts to regular quizzing. He continued to do well throughout the year at Quizzes across the country, along with QM'ing a few as well, one of which he will be presenting this Sunday. We hope to see everyone there for one last time in 2013 to wish the BQC even more renown, success and glory in the coming year.

This weekend, apologise to your family and friends as Saturday morning is the only time you will get to spend with them. Once you finish lunch on saturday, questions and quizzers will keep you company right until sunday evening. Kicking off the written quiz bonanza will be the British Open Quiz Grand Prix, a written quiz consisting of 240 questions divided into 6 categories

 Art & Culture (history, philosophy, mythology, religion, fine art etc.)

• Civilisation (human geography, cultures, technology, current affairs etc.)

• Entertainment (all musical genres, literature, TV, radio, films, stage, dance, etc.)

• Lifestyle (health & fitness, celebrities, food & drink, fashion, handicrafts etc.)

• Physical World (physical geography, science, nature, flora & fauna etc.)

• Sport & Games (includes hobbies & pastimes, but mainly Sport in all its guises)
