World Quizzing Championship 2013

One of the most liked written quizzes of the year is happening this Saturday.  BQC will host the Bombay leg of the 2013 World Quizzing Championship on 1st June at 4 pm at our usual venue Pinstorm.

As usual, it will be a 240 question written quiz, divided into 8 sections of 30 questions each. A participant's score will be the sum of his/her best 7 sectional scores.

Pre registration is compulsory as we will have limited answer sheets. On the spot participation will be allowed only if any of the registered participants pull off a no-show. But taking that risk is stupid. Really very stupid. Please register HERE.

Once again, please note that the Quiz is on Saturday, 1st June at 4 pm. Please get a writing instrument along. Don't go around begging for an extra pen. That's just stupid.

Bollywood Ka Boss

Vibhendu Tewari is always the last word when it comes to Indian Cinema. Youve seen him answer AV questions without looking at the AV. You've seen him point out mistakes in a question, and still answering it better than the actual answer slide. He wont get a chance to do all that this Sunday, because the master turns Quiz-master for a 100 question Quiz he has set as a tribute to Indian cinema completing 100 years.

It will be a written quiz with all dry (no AV) questions, to be completed in 2 hours. In order to print enough answer sheets, we require contestants to register for the quiz soon. Please register HERE. Registration is free.

Quizmaster: VIbhendu Tewari
When: 3 PM, Sunday, 30th May 2013 (Please be there by 2:45 PM)

MCBC Cup Review

The First MCBC Cup saw a bounty of sports gawds descend to the venue, very early in the morning for a four hour sports feast. An idea borrowed form the BC Cup had a good first run, with the general review for the quiz being -  good coverage of fundaes, but very tough.

QMs - Anannya Deb and Shubhankar Gokhale

Prelims - 30 Question written prelims.
The top 12 were to be chosen from the prelims for the QuarterFinals. Pradeep Ramarathnam topped a low scoring prelim with 17. The other qualifiers were Rohit Suresh, Aditya Gadre, Aniket Khasgiwale, Atul Mathew, Atul Nath, Sumant Srivathsan, Ramkey V, Venkatraghavan S and Anand Sivashankar. Suraj Menon took the Final spot with 12.

Quarter Finals - The Quarter Final started slowly but everyone picked up speed in the second half of the 36 Questions. The top 6 to qualify for the next round were Rohit, Aditya, Atul Mathew, Suraj Menon, Venkatraghavan S, Ramkey V. Suraj top scored with 6 points. ADitya and Anand were tied on scores, but Aditya qualified by Virtue of a higher prelims score.

Semi final - The 6 contestants carried their scores from the QF, for an 18 Question IR round. While everyone scored at a decent pace, Atul Mathew shifted a gear and ended te round with 14 points, while the others played around 9s and 10s. Aditya, Ramkey and Venkatraghavan qualified with Atul to the Final.

Final - In a 12 question tough final, each contestant was asked to choose a topic on which he was asked 3 questions, with pouncing allowed for the other contestants. While everyone cracked good answers, Atuls lead from the semis allowed him to take it easy and win with 16 points, keeping the home flag flying. Aditya and Ramkey were tied at 12, but they decided to ditch the tie breaker and split the prize.

MCBC cup 2013 winner - Atul Mathew

Reviews from Contestants

Atul Mathew (winner)
+ves - Good mix of sports.
+ve- V.competitive field. Keep this on May 1st going ahead.
-ves Somequestions had no clear fundas or left the the audience scratching their head figuring out the quizworthyness of the answer -who cares if someone is from the tropics for instance?

Aditya Gadre (finalist)
Overall very studly quiz.
+ves: Superb range of questions both in terms of sports covered as well as geographies etc.Very educating , almost no fundaes I had heard beforeExcellent use of AV

-ves: Questions with answers like "tropical countries" have no place in a sports quiz. Pounce in QFs would have made it fairer (It also means I probably would not have qualified  )
